Tam Cốc means "three caves" — Hang Cả, Hang Hai and Hang Ba, linked one after another along the gentle Ngô Đồng River. The sampan glides downstream between two walls of cliffs and rice fields; in the ripe-rice season of May–June the whole valley turns golden, earning it the name "Halong Bay on land." The boatmen of Tam Cốc are famous for their masterful foot-rowing technique.
